Tokyo Bunka Kaikan in Ueno Park, Tokyo, opened in 1961 to mark the city's 500th anniversary and was one of the first large halls in Tokyo for classical music. It is regarded as a major work of architect Kunio Maekawa and received the Architectural Institute of Japan Prize in 1961. The Main Hall, with 2,303 seats on five levels, is used for concerts, opera and ballet; its cloud-shaped beech wood sound diffusers were made by the sculptor Ryokichi Mukai. The Recital Hall, seating about 650, is designed for chamber music. The Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra is based here, and thanks to its generous backstage space, visiting opera companies such as the Vienna State Opera regularly perform here. It has been closed since May 2026 for a major renovation, with reopening planned in fiscal year 2028.
The Tokyo Bunka Kaikan, opened in 1961, was Japan's first modern Western-style concert and opera house — architect Kunio Maekawa, a pupil of Le Corbusier, shaped Japanese post-war modernism with the building.
