The Minskoff Theatre, opened in 1973 as part of the One Astor Plaza building in the heart of Times Square, represents the modern Broadway architecture of the 1970s. With 1,710 seats and state-of-the-art stage technology, the house was conceived for large-scale productions and has one of the widest proscenium frames on Broadway — ideal for spectacle productions. Since June 2006 the Minskoff has been the home of Disney's "The Lion King" on Broadway — the original production by Julie Taymor previously ran for over a decade at the New Amsterdam Theatre. "The Lion King" has reached over 110 million spectators worldwide and is among the commercially most successful entertainment productions of all time. The combination of Taymor's artful staging and African-inspired music makes the Minskoff a magical theatre experience.
The unusually wide proscenium allows "The Lion King" an animal parade through the auditorium — the giraffe performers balance on stilts.
