Majestic Theatre

New York, USA

The Majestic Theatre on 44th Street, erected in 1927 by the architect Herbert J. Krapp in classic Beaux-Arts style, is, with its 1,681 seats, among the largest Broadway houses and is run to this day by the Shubert Organization. The elegant stone façade and the atmospheric auditorium with chandeliers and richly decorated boxes lend the house a timeless dignity. The Majestic became world-famous as the home of Andrew Lloyd Webber's "The Phantom of the Opera" — the Broadway production ran here from January 1988 to April 2023 in over 13,900 performances and was thus the longest-running musical in Broadway history. After the end of the "Phantom" residency, the house underwent a renovation and has since received new productions — most recently "The Great Gatsby".

Did you know?

For "Phantom," the same chandelier hung over the audience for 35 years — it crashed down in a controlled fall eight times a week and was auctioned off during the 2023 renovation.
