The Imperial Theatre, built in 1923 by Herbert J. Krapp for the Shubert Brothers, is, with 1,443 seats, a classic medium-sized Broadway house. The unobtrusive but elegant façade and the well-proportioned auditorium with excellent sightlines have made the house the preferred place for musically and dramaturgically demanding musical productions for a century. The list of premieres at the Imperial reads like a canon of American musical theatre: "Annie Get Your Gun" (1946), "Fiddler on the Roof" (1964), "Les Misérables" (1990) and most recently "Ain't Too Proud — The Life and Times of The Temptations" as well as "Bad Cinderella". Currently "Water for Elephants" resides here. The house is a living archive of America's musical stage history.
The Imperial Theatre in New York, opened in 1923, is one of the most tradition-rich Broadway theatres — Les Misérables ran here for 16 years, before that Annie Get Your Gun and Fiddler on the Roof delighted audiences.
