The Gershwin Theatre on 51st Street in New York is, with 1,933 seats, the largest theatre on Broadway and one of the largest drama theatres in Manhattan. Opened in 1972 as the Uris Theatre, it was renamed in 1983 in honour of the composer brothers George and Ira Gershwin — creators of classics like Rhapsody in Blue, An American in Paris, and Porgy and Bess. The theatre has been home to Wicked since 2003, the highest-grossing musical in Broadway history; the show has earned over 1.7 billion dollars and attracted over 13 million spectators. The Gershwin belongs to the Nederlander Organization, one of the three major Broadway theatre operators. The modern interior offers very good sightlines from all seats.
For "Wicked," the stage machinery was rebuilt so that the levitating witch Elphaba rises almost to the ceiling at the finale — night after night for over two decades.
