David Geffen Hall is the concert home of the New York Philharmonic and part of Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts on Manhattan's Upper West Side. It opened in 1962 as Philharmonic Hall, designed by the architect Max Abramovitz, and was the first completed building of the Lincoln Center complex. Over the decades the hall has borne several names – first Avery Fisher Hall, and since 2015, following a major gift from the media entrepreneur David Geffen, its present name. For decades its acoustics were considered problematic; after a fundamental rebuilding of the interior, the hall reopened in October 2022 with markedly improved sound and a more intimate auditorium wrapping around the stage. With around 2,200 seats, David Geffen Hall is the home of one of the oldest and most renowned symphony orchestras in the United States and a central venue of New York's musical life.
The interior rebuild was brought forward during the pandemic and completed in 2022, about two years ahead of schedule.
