The Bühnen Halle (officially Theater, Oper und Orchester GmbH Halle) form the largest multi-genre theatre in Saxony-Anhalt and are located in several venues in Halle (Saale). The main venues are the Opera House with around 700 seats (opened in 1886 as a historicist building, modernised several times) and the New Theatre at Universitätsring for drama. The house is home to the Staatskapelle Halle, one of the oldest orchestras in Germany. Halle is the birthplace of Georg Friedrich Handel — the annual Handel Festival in June is one of the most important Baroque music events in Europe. The Bühnen Halle produce about 25 premieres per season across all genres and are considered the cultural centre of Central Germany.
Georg Friedrich Handel was born in Halle in 1685 — his birthplace is now a museum, and the annual Handel Festival cultivates his work in his home city.
