Aarhus Teater

Aarhus, Denmark

Aarhus Theatre on Bispetorv is the largest of Denmark's landsdelsscener, or principal regional theatres. The building, in the Skønvirke style, the Danish variant of Art Nouveau, was designed by Hack Kampmann; it was inaugurated on 15 September 1900, replacing the old theatre nicknamed "Svedekassen" (the Sweat-box), which had become too small. The decoration is by Karl Hansen Reistrup, and the Holberg figures in the facade frieze are by Hans Tegner. From 1906 to 1954 the building also housed the Fotorama cinema. Today there are four stages under one roof: the Main Stage with 701 seats, Scala with 285, and Studio and Stiklingen with 80 to 100 each. A permanent ensemble and in-house workshops support around 20 productions and some 450 performances a year, mostly the theatre's own.
