Det Kongelige Teater (Royal Theatre) Copenhagen is one of the oldest multi-genre stages in Europe, founded in 1748 under King Frederik V. Today the institution comprises three main venues: the Gamle Scene at Kongens Nytorv (1874) for drama and ballet, the modern Operaen at the harbour (2005) for opera, and the Skuespilhuset (2008) for contemporary drama. The Royal Danish Ballet, one of the oldest ballet ensembles in the world, particularly cultivates the legacy of August Bournonville. With the Royal Danish Opera, Royal Danish Theatre, and Royal Danish Ballet under one roof, the theatre is Denmark's central cultural institution.
The modern harbour opera house was built by the Mærsk shipping foundation and gifted to the Danish state — which, however, had no say in the controversial design.
