Biography
Ödön von Horváth was born in 1901 in Fiume (today Rijeka) and exposed in his Volksstücke the abysses of the petty bourgeoisie. Tales from the Vienna Woods (1931) and Kasimir und Karoline are among the most important dramas of the Weimar Republic. Horváth's Bildungssprache — his characters speak in false, half-learned phrases — became style-defining for German theatre. He died in 1938 in Paris when a tree branch struck him during a thunderstorm.
