Biography
Modest Petrovich Mussorgsky was born in 1839 in Karevo in the Russian Pskov Governorate and belonged to the legendary Mighty Handful of Russian national composers. His opera Boris Godunov after Pushkin is considered a masterpiece of Russian music theatre and impresses through its psychological depth and the powerful portrayal of the Russian people. The piano cycle Pictures at an Exhibition, world-famous in Ravel's orchestration, is among the most popular works of classical music. Mussorgsky strove for a truth in music that should be free of academic conventions and oriented himself on the melody of the Russian language. Many of his works remained unfinished and were edited by Rimsky-Korsakov and others, which still triggers controversial discussions about the correct versions today. His life was overshadowed by alcoholism. Mussorgsky died in 1881 in Saint Petersburg, only forty-two years old.
