Biography

John Kander was born in 1927 in Kansas City, Missouri, and shaped together with lyricist Fred Ebb the American musical for five decades. Their musical Cabaret of 1966, set in Berlin during the Weimar Republic, is considered a milestone of dark, politically conscious music theatre. Chicago became, after its 1996 revival, the longest-running revival in Broadway history. Kander's music combines jazz, vaudeville, and European influences into a distinctive style that always places the dramatic situation at its centre. Further successful musicals like Kiss of the Spider Woman and The Scottsboro Boys proved his enduring creative power. The partnership Kander & Ebb was one of the last great Broadway songwriting duos in the tradition of Rodgers and Hammerstein. Kander died in 2024 in New York.
