Biography

Jim Jacobs was born in 1942 in Chicago and created together with Warren Casey the musical Grease, which premiered in 1971 and became one of the most beloved musicals in theatre history. The show, which celebrates 1950s youth culture with rock'n'roll numbers and tongue-in-cheek humour, ran on Broadway over three thousand times. The 1978 film adaptation with John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John made Grease a worldwide cultural phenomenon. Jacobs drew inspiration from his own experiences as a teenager in 1950s Chicago and thereby touched a nerve across multiple generations. The musical continues to be performed at schools, amateur theatres, and professional stages around the globe. Jacobs' contribution to the popularisation of the rock musical is remarkable.
