Biography
Jean-Philippe Rameau (1683–1764), born in Dijon, was the leading French composer of the eighteenth century before the Revolution. He was known first as a music theorist — his 1722 Treatise on Harmony laid the foundations of modern harmonic theory. He emerged as an opera composer only in his fifties, and with works such as Hippolyte et Aricie, Les Indes galantes, Castor et Pollux and the comédie-lyrique Platée he decisively shaped French tragédie en musique and the opéra-ballet.
