Biography
Jean-Marie Leclair (1697–1764), born in Lyon, is regarded as the founder of the French violin school. Active first as a dancer and violinist, he produced a substantial body of violin sonatas and concertos that fused Italian virtuosity with French elegance. His only opera, Scylla et Glaucus (1746), is a high point of French Baroque opera. Leclair was murdered in Paris in 1764 under circumstances that remain unexplained to this day.
