Biography
Herman Melville was born in 1819 in New York City and is among the most significant writers of American literature. His main work Moby-Dick of 1851 received little attention initially but is today considered one of the greatest novels in world literature. His novella Billy Budd, published posthumously, served Benjamin Britten as the basis for one of his most significant operas. Melville himself sailed as a young man and processed his experiences on whaling ships and in the South Seas in his literary work. His writing is distinguished by philosophical depth, allegorical richness, and powerful prose. Unrecognised in his lifetime, Melville was rediscovered only in the 1920s and has since been celebrated as a master of the American Renaissance. He died in 1891 in New York City, almost forgotten.
