Biography

Gaspare Spontini (1774–1851) was an Italian opera composer and conductor who built his career chiefly in Paris and Berlin. His opera La vestale (1807), created under the patronage of Empress Joséphine, was a triumph of French Grand Opéra and, with its monumental style, lastingly influenced Berlioz and Wagner. From 1820 Spontini served as Generalmusikdirektor at the Royal Opera in Berlin, where his authoritarian manner led to conflict. He is regarded as an important link between the Gluckian tradition and Romantic opera.
