Biography
Eugen d’Albert was born in Glasgow in 1864 to a French-Italian father and a German mother, and felt bound to German musical culture throughout his life. From 1881 he studied with Franz Liszt in Weimar, who thought highly of him as a pianist, and he subsequently toured internationally as a keyboard virtuoso. A British citizen until 1918, he then took Swiss nationality. Alongside two piano concertos and chamber music, he composed 21 operas; his greatest success came in 1903 with „Tiefland“, based on Àngel Guimerà's play „Terra baixa“, still his most frequently performed opera. From 1907 he directed the Berlin Hochschule für Musik. He died in 1932 in Riga, where he had travelled for the divorce from his sixth wife.
