Biography
Claude-Michel Schönberg (born 1944 in Vannes, France) is the composer of Les Misérables and Miss Saigon, two of the most successful sung-through musicals in history. Schönberg began his career as a French pop singer and songwriter before turning to musical theatre with La Révolution Française (1973). His collaboration with librettist Alain Boublil produced Les Misérables in 1980, which was substantially reshaped for English-language production by Cameron Mackintosh in 1985 and became the second-longest-running musical in West End history. Miss Saigon, a contemporary adaptation of Puccini's Madama Butterfly transposed to the Vietnam War, premiered in 1989 and likewise became a global hit. Later works include Martin Guerre and The Pirate Queen. Schönberg's fusion of operatic melody with pop-theatrical idiom defined the French school of musical theatre.
