Biography

Aribert Reimann (1936-2024) was one of the most significant German composers of the second half of the twentieth century and one of the most important contemporary opera composers. Born in Berlin, he studied with Boris Blacher and worked early as a pianist with singers like Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau. His main work is the opera Lear (1978), based on Shakespeare and premiered in Munich under Gerd Albrecht — one of the most performed contemporary opera works. Further operas like Das Schloss (1992, after Kafka), Bernarda Albas Haus (2000, after Lorca), and Medea (2010, after Grillparzer) cemented his reputation as a master of literary opera. Reimann passed away in Berlin in 2024 at the age of 88.
