Antonio Salieri

1750 – 1825 · Italian

Biography

Antonio Salieri was born on 18 August 1750 in Legnago in the Republic of Venice and, at the age of sixteen, was brought to Vienna by court composer Florian Leopold Gassmann, who introduced him to Emperor Joseph II and through whom he formed friendships with Christoph Willibald Gluck and Pietro Metastasio. In 1774 the emperor appointed him court composer, and in 1788 he became Hofkapellmeister, a post he held for thirty-six years. Salieri wrote more than forty operas for the stages of Vienna, Venice and Paris, alongside numerous sacred and secular vocal works, and was one of the most influential teachers of his era, numbering Ludwig van Beethoven, Franz Schubert and Franz Liszt among his pupils. He died in Vienna on 7 May 1825.
