About the work
La locandiera is a dramma giocoso in three acts by Antonio Salieri to a libretto by Domenico Poggi, based on Carlo Goldoni's comedy of the same name. It premiered on 8 June 1773 at the Burgtheater in Vienna.
Plot
The resourceful innkeeper Mirandolina skilfully keeps a marquis, a count and a misogynistic knight at bay and played off against one another, before finally choosing a match of her own standing.
Cultural significance
Salieri's setting was the first musical adaptation of Goldoni's twenty-year-old stage success and launched its long career as operatic material; the opera itself fell into obscurity and was not staged again until 1989, at the Teatro Rossini in Lugo.
