Biography
Antonio Caldara was born around 1670 in Venice and is thought to have trained under Giovanni Legrenzi. From 1700 to 1707 he served as Kapellmeister at the court of Mantua, then worked in Rome until 1716, before settling permanently in Vienna. There he became vice-Kapellmeister of the imperial court chapel under Johann Joseph Fux, a post he held until his death on 28 December 1736. With more than eighty operas alongside numerous oratorios, masses and cantatas, he was among the most prolific composers of his time, and together with Fux and Francesco Conti he shaped the representative church and opera style of the Viennese imperial court, blending Venetian-Roman counterpoint with Neapolitan melodic writing.
