Biography
Andrew Lloyd Webber (born 1948 in London) is the most commercially successful composer in the history of musical theatre. His career began with Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat (1968, lyrics by Tim Rice) and reached global recognition with Jesus Christ Superstar (1971) and Evita (1978). The 1980s blockbusters Cats (1981), Starlight Express (1984), and The Phantom of the Opera (1986) transformed the economics of musical theatre and established the concept of the mega-musical. Lloyd Webber has also composed Sunset Boulevard, Love Never Dies, and School of Rock. His style combines operatic scale with pop sensibility and has drawn criticism alongside enormous popular success. Created a life peer in 1997 as Baron Lloyd-Webber of Sydmonton, he owns several historic West End theatres through his Really Useful Group company.
