Biography

Alexander von Zemlinsky (1871–1942), born in Vienna, was a composer, conductor and influential teacher — among his pupils was Arnold Schoenberg, who also became his brother-in-law. His music combines late-Romantic richness with modern tendencies. Among his most important stage works are the one-act operas A Florentine Tragedy and Der Zwerg (The Dwarf, 1922). As a Jew, Zemlinsky was forced to emigrate in 1938 and died in exile in the United States in 1942.
