Biography

Albert Lortzing (1801–1851) was a German composer, librettist, singer, and actor of the Romantic era, regarded as the foremost exponent of German Spieloper (comic opera). Born into a family of actors, he was largely self-taught and usually wrote the librettos of his stage works himself. His best-known works, Zar und Zimmermann (1837) and Der Wildschütz (1842), combine catchy melody with folk humour and remain part of the standard repertoire of German opera houses. Despite his success, Lortzing died impoverished in Berlin.
