Biography

Alban Berg was born in 1885 in Vienna and is considered one of the pioneers of musical modernism. As a student of Arnold Schönberg, he belonged to the core of the Second Viennese School and combined the twelve-tone technique with deeply felt expressivity. His opera Wozzeck, premiered in 1925 in Berlin, is considered a milestone of twentieth-century music theatre and is regularly staged at all major opera houses to this day. The unfinished late work Lulu after Frank Wedekind's dramas fascinates through its iridescent sound language and psychological depth. Berg's violin concerto To the Memory of an Angel is among the most moving works of the concert literature. Despite his slim oeuvre, he exerted enormous influence on subsequent composer generations. Berg died in 1935 in Vienna from blood poisoning, only fifty years old.
