Saison in Salzburg

Fred Raymond
Opera · 1938
Operette

About the work

Operetta in five scenes by Fred Raymond, libretto by Max Wallner and Kurt Feltz, first performed on 31 December 1938 at the Städtische Bühnen Kiel.

Plot

In Salzburg, an indebted innkeeper's hotel faces forced auction while romantic entanglements develop between a race-car driver posing as a mountain guide, a resourceful cook, and the innkeeper's niece. A resolute and clever aunt eventually resolves the misunderstandings, bringing three couples fittingly together.

Cultural significance

With folk-flavoured numbers such as the 'Salzburger Nockerln' and several ensemble scenes, the operetta cultivated an idealised image of Alpine summer holiday life that matched the taste of the late 1930s; the work was filmed repeatedly through 1961.
