Biography

Fred Raymond, born Friedrich Raimund Vesely, was born in Vienna in 1900 and lost both parents in 1915; he then trained in banking and worked at the Austrian National Bank while studying piano and music theory at the Vienna Conservatory. From 1923 he wrote songs for Fritz Grünbaum's cabaret, and in 1925 achieved his international breakthrough with 'Ich hab mein Herz in Heidelberg verloren.' He moved to Berlin and became one of the most frequently performed operetta composers of the 1930s and 1940s, with works including 'Maske in Blau' (1937) and 'Saison in Salzburg' (1938). Fred Raymond died in Überlingen in 1954; his artistic estate was donated to the University of Salzburg in 2015.
