About the work

Moulin Rouge! The Musical is a jukebox musical with a book by John Logan, premiered on Broadway in 2019. Based on Baz Luhrmann's 2001 film of the same name, it weaves more than seventy pop hits spanning several decades into a lavish stage show. It won ten Tony Awards, including Best Musical.

Plot

In the dazzling Parisian nightclub Moulin Rouge around 1900, the penniless American composer Christian falls in love with the celebrated courtesan and singer Satine. But Satine is promised to the wealthy, jealous Duke, on whose money the club depends. As the bohemian troupe around the director Zidler rehearses a grand show, Christian and Satine fight for their love against social constraints—and against Satine's incurable illness, which drives the drama to a tragic end.

Cultural significance

Moulin Rouge! brought Luhrmann's intoxicating, maximalist film aesthetic to the stage with spectacular production design and is regarded as one of the most opulent mega-musicals of recent years. Its bold mash-ups of well-known pop songs—from Lady Marmalade to Your Song—appeal to a broad audience. The work exemplifies the trend of the jukebox spectacle and celebrates the bohemian ideals of truth, beauty, freedom, and love.
