About the work
One-act tragicomedy by Georgian writer Micho Mossulischwili, written in 2012 and first staged on 12 July 2013 at the municipal theatre of Bolnisi, Georgia. By 2016 it had been produced at four further Georgian theatres; it appeared in print in Georgia in 2015 and in a Latvian translation in 2016.
Plot
After years in the United States, Sopho returns to her Georgian home village and learns that her husband Tchito, whom she had believed dead, is alive and has since married her childhood friend Shoka — his gravestone had been part of a scheme to extort her. Matters worsen when a retired American colonel she once worked for arrives: Sopho signs a contract for further payments, prompting the village to file a complaint against her with human rights organisations.
Cultural significance
The play belongs to Mossulischwili's extensive body of work for stage, radio and television, which has since been translated into Latvian, German, Russian and other languages.
