Madama Butterfly

Giacomo Puccini
Opera · 1904
Verismo

About the work

Giacomo Puccini's tragedy in three acts (originally two) was premiered on 17 February 1904 at La Scala Milan, where it suffered one of the most famous failures in operatic history—a fiasco Puccini blamed partly on hostile claques. He revised the work substantially, and the successful version appeared only months later in Brescia. The opera is based on David Belasco's play, itself derived from John Luther Long's short story and ultimately from Pierre Loti's novel Madame Chrysanthème.

Plot

Cio-Cio-San, known as Butterfly, is a fifteen-year-old Japanese geisha who marries the American naval officer B. F. Pinkerton in Nagasaki. She believes the marriage genuine and renounces her religion for it; Pinkerton treats it as a temporary diversion. After he departs for America, Butterfly waits three years with her child and her devoted maid Suzuki, refusing a wealthy suitor and clinging to faith in his return. When Pinkerton finally arrives, he brings an American wife, Kate, who wishes to adopt the child. Recognising the ruin of her situation, Butterfly blindfolds her son, gives him an American flag and a doll, and commits ritual suicide with her father's ceremonial dagger as Pinkerton rushes in too late.

Cultural significance

Madama Butterfly belongs to the pillars of the Italian repertoire and contains the celebrated aria Un bel dì vedremo as its emotional core, along with the wordless Humming Chorus of the night vigil. The work has prompted continuous critical reassessment of its orientalist depictions and the tension between Puccini's musical empathy and colonial-era stereotype. The musical Miss Saigon of 1989 is a direct adaptation, relocating the story to the Vietnam War, and Butterfly remains among the five most frequently performed operas in the world.
