About the work
Legally Blonde is a musical by Laurence O'Keefe and Nell Benjamin (music and lyrics) with a book by Heather Hach, premiered on Broadway in 2007. Based on the 2001 screen hit with Reese Witherspoon, it brings its bright-pink energy to the stage.
Plot
The fashion-conscious California student Elle Woods is dumped by her boyfriend because she does not seem "serious" enough for him. Determined to win him back, she unexpectedly gains admission to Harvard Law School. There Elle proves that behind the blonde, pink facade lies a sharp mind: she masters law school, solves a spectacular murder trial, and finds genuine self-confidence—and, along the way, true love.
Cultural significance
Legally Blonde became an audience favourite, wrapping its message of self-determination and the right to be oneself in a colourful, high-energy pop musical. With numbers such as Omigod You Guys and So Much Better, it especially appealed to a young, female audience. The production was an early success in the trend of film-to-musical adaptations and remains a favourite of touring and school stages.
