About the work

Káťa Kabanová is an opera in three acts by Leoš Janáček, premiered in Brno in 1921. Based on Alexander Ostrovsky's drama The Storm, it is regarded as one of Janáček's most moving works, about a sensitive woman who breaks under the narrowness of her environment.

Plot

In a Russian provincial town on the Volga, the sensitive Káťa suffers under her weak husband Tikhon and above all under her tyrannical mother-in-law Kabanicha, who torments her ceaselessly. While Tikhon is away, Káťa gives in to her love for the young Boris. Consumed by guilt and the crushing double standards of her surroundings, she publicly confesses her adultery during a thunderstorm. Cast out and despairing, with no hope of a life with Boris, Káťa throws herself into the Volga.

Cultural significance

Káťa Kabanová displays Janáček's unmistakable style: a vocal line developed from the rhythms and melodies of spoken speech, and a richly coloured, psychologically penetrating orchestration. The work is a compassionate portrait of a woman destroyed by hypocrisy, oppression, and her own longing for freedom. It is among Janáček's most frequently performed operas and one of the great female tragedies of the twentieth century.
