About the work
Ich war noch niemals in New York is a jukebox musical built on the songs of Udo Jürgens, with a book by Gabriel Barylli and Christian Struppeck, premiered in 2007 at the Operettenhaus Hamburg. Named after one of Jürgens's greatest hits, it became one of the most successful German-language musicals.
Plot
The resolute TV presenter Lisa suffers memory loss after an accident and follows a sudden impulse: she boards a cruise ship bound for New York. She is followed by her overprotective mother Maria, the shy ship's barber Fred, her son, and other characters—each in search of love, freedom, or a fresh start. During the crossing, their life stories tangle into a warm-hearted comedy about second chances and the courage to break out of the familiar.
Cultural significance
The musical weaves Udo Jürgens's Schlager and chanson classics—including Griechischer Wein, Aber bitte mit Sahne, and the title song—into a cross-generational family comedy. It ran successfully for years in Hamburg, Vienna, Berlin, and on tour and is among the most frequently performed German-language jukebox musicals. Its success demonstrates the enduring popularity of Jürgens's songs across generations.
