About the work
Play by Jack Thorne based on a story he developed together with J. K. Rowling and director John Tiffany, continuing the story of the Harry Potter novels. It premiered on 30 July 2016 at the Palace Theatre in London, directed by John Tiffany; originally staged as a two-part evening, a shortened one-part version has also been performed since 2021.
Plot
Nineteen years after Voldemort's defeat, Harry Potter works at the Ministry of Magic while his son Albus Severus struggles at Hogwarts and clashes with his father over his legacy. When Albus secretly uses a stolen Time-Turner to prevent Cedric Diggory's death, he sets off a chain of events that creates a dark alternate timeline ruled by Voldemort.
Cultural significance
The play became the most commercially successful of its time, winning a record nine Laurence Olivier Awards in 2017 and six Tony Awards in 2018, including Best New Play and Best Play respectively. Its place in the Harry Potter canon remained contested among fans because of the newly introduced time-travel plot.
