About the work

Lin-Manuel Miranda's sung-and-rapped musical was premiered Off-Broadway in 2015 at The Public Theater and transferred within months to the Richard Rodgers Theatre on Broadway, where it became the most culturally impactful theatrical event of the decade. Based on Ron Chernow's 2004 biography of Alexander Hamilton, the work combines hip-hop, R&B, and traditional show tunes to tell the story of an American founding father through the voices of Black and Latinx performers.

Plot

Alexander Hamilton, an orphaned immigrant from the Caribbean, rises through the ranks of the American Revolution to become George Washington's right-hand man, treasury secretary, and defining architect of the United States federal government. His fierce rivalries with Aaron Burr, his affair with Maria Reynolds, and his strained relationship with his wife Eliza lead him through scandal and triumph. The political and personal conflicts culminate in the notorious 1804 duel in which Burr shoots Hamilton dead. In the final number, Eliza Hamilton speaks of preserving her husband's legacy—the history that bears his name.

Cultural significance

Hamilton redefined what Broadway could be in the twenty-first century. It won eleven Tony Awards, the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, and generated one of the best-selling cast albums in musical theatre history. Its colour-conscious casting of white historical figures played by actors of colour opened essential conversations about who gets to tell American stories. The 2020 filmed stage capture on Disney+ reached global audiences during the pandemic. The Hamburg German-language production, translated by Kevin Schroeder and Sera Finale, opened in 2022 at the Stage Operettenhaus Hamburg.
