About the work
Frozen is a musical with music and lyrics by Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez and a book by Jennifer Lee, premiered on Broadway in 2018. It is based on the 2013 Disney animated film of the same name, one of the most successful animated films of all time.
Plot
Princess Elsa possesses magical ice powers that she hides for fear of hurting others. When her powers spin out of control at her coronation and plunge the kingdom of Arendelle into eternal winter, Elsa flees to the mountains. Her sister Anna sets out to bring her back—accompanied by the ice harvester Kristoff and the fun-loving snowman Olaf. The story celebrates the power of sisterly love, which in the end proves to be the true "act of true love" that breaks the spell.
Cultural significance
Frozen brought the global Disney phenomenon to Broadway with new stage songs in addition to the film hits. The song Let It Go became a worldwide anthem of self-liberation and one of the most successful Disney songs ever. As an elaborate family musical with spectacular stage effects, it appeals above all to a young audience and cements Disney's presence in musical theatre.
