About the work
El alma al aire is a Spanish musical developed from the songs of Alejandro Sanz and named after one of his albums; the book is by Álvaro Tato. Stage Entertainment describes it as its first entirely Spanish original production, developed from scratch over four years. It is directed by Jonathan Kent, with choreography by Lynne Page and music supervision, orchestrations and arrangements by Nicholas Skilbeck. It premiered at the Teatro Ocaso Coliseum on the Gran Vía in Madrid, with a gala performance on 30 September 2026 and regular performances from 1 October 2026.
Plot
In a fishing village on the Spanish coast the young musician Ale, his family and his friend Bruno watch Alma, a property developer from Madrid, move into the village with her two daughters. Her arrival upsets the balance of a community already stirred up by the Levante wind. The story is carried by songs such as Corazón partío, Amiga mía and No es lo mismo.
Cultural significance
Unlike many musicals built on the songs of well-known pop artists, the work does not tell the singer's life story but an entirely new one. A tour of Spanish-speaking countries is planned for the production.
