About the work
"Ein Mann seiner Klasse" (A Man of His Class) is an autobiographical novel by the German journalist and writer Christian Baron, published by Claassen in 2020. It grew out of an essay on his father's violence that Baron had published in 2019. In 2023 the Pfalztheater Kaiserslautern, Baron's hometown theatre, staged an adaptation of the material on its studio stage.
Plot
The narrator grows up in a poor family in Kaiserslautern in the 1990s, whose daily life is shaped by his drinking father's violence and his depressed mother's exhaustion. Moving between tenderness and threat, he describes how poverty both binds the family together and tears it apart, and how, as a teenager, he breaks away from these circumstances through education.
Cultural significance
The novel won the Klaus-Michael-Kühne-Preis in 2020 and the "Aufstieg durch Bildung" literary prize of the noon Foundation in 2021, and is widely regarded as a notable contribution to Germany's debate on class origin and poverty. A television film adaptation followed in 2024.
