About the work
“The Ruins of Civilization” is a dystopian chamber play by the British playwright Penelope Skinner. It premiered at Manhattan Theatre Club in New York: after previews from 4 May 2016, the official opening took place on 18 May 2016 at The Studio at Stage II, New York City Center, directed by Leah C. Gardiner. The German translation is by Katharina Pütter.
Plot
In a future England marked by climate collapse, the borders are closed and the state rewards childlessness: the novelist Silver and his wife Dolores live a sheltered, comfortable life thanks to a government scheme, as long as they have no children. When Dolores secretly takes in a pregnant woman from outside who works as a masseuse, the marriage begins to crack. Dolores cannot save the world but wants to help in small ways, and has to learn what that choice costs.
Cultural significance
The play links climate catastrophe, border closure and state control of reproduction with a private marital drama; Skinner cited the ecological threat as her starting point. New York critics acknowledged the subject but faulted the premiere for thinly drawn central characters and a dystopia that felt familiar.
