About the work

Der Vetter aus Dingsda (The Cousin from Nowhere) is a three-act operetta by Eduard Künneke to a libretto by Herman Haller and Fritz Oliven, based on a comedy by Max Kempner-Hochstädt. It premiered on 15 April 1921 at the Theater am Nollendorfplatz in Berlin-Schöneberg and became by far the composer's greatest stage success.

Plot

The heiress Julia lives at Schloss de Weert under the guardianship of her uncle Josse, who wants to marry her off to his nephew August to keep the inheritance in the family. For seven years Julia has waited for her childhood love Roderich to return. When a mysterious wandering journeyman appears, she falls for him even though he admits he is not Roderich. In the end it turns out the real Roderich has long forgotten her — while the wanderer, actually named August Kuhbrot, becomes her husband.

Cultural significance

With the song Ich bin nur ein armer Wandergesell, Künneke created one of the best-known operetta hits of the 1920s; the work remains among the most frequently performed German operettas and has been filmed several times.
