Biography
Eduard Künneke was born on 27 January 1885 in Emmerich on the Lower Rhine and died on 27 October 1953 in Berlin. He studied at the Berlin Hochschule für Musik from 1903 to 1905 and, from 1906, was a master student of Max Bruch at the Academy of Arts. Between 1907 and 1911 he worked as chorus director at the Neues Operettentheater and as conductor at the Deutsches Theater under Max Reinhardt, becoming conductor at the Friedrich-Wilhelmstädtisches Theater in 1917. After two little-noticed operas, he had his breakthrough as an operetta composer in 1919 with the Singspiel Das Dorf ohne Glocke, followed by international success in 1921 with Der Vetter aus Dingsda. In 1925–26 he spent time in the United States on composing commissions. Künneke is regarded as a pioneer in bringing American dance rhythms and jazz elements into German operetta.
