About the work

“Der Riss” (“The Crack”) is a new play by Marco Damghani, written as a commission for Schauspiel Leipzig. Its world premiere, directed by the author himself, is scheduled for 4 February 2027 at the theatre's Diskothek venue. The theatre describes the text as a humorous grotesque.

Plot

The play is set in Lümow, a fictional village. Anna wants to turn the old granary into a start-up with space for creative people, and the community argues over whether to reinvent itself economically. Meanwhile a crack opens up in the asphalt of the village street and is ignored for a long time; it grows from a minor blemish into an obstacle until it splits the village into two camps, both physically and politically.

Cultural significance

After “Die Leiden des jungen Azzlack” (2021) and “Anouk & Adofa” (2022), “Der Riss” is the third of his own texts that Damghani is directing at Schauspiel Leipzig. As in his earlier work, he links political disputes with the everyday life of a small community.
