Der Freischütz for Children

Carl Maria von Weber
Opera · 1821

About the work

„Der Freischütz for Children" is a shortened, child-friendly version of Carl Maria von Weber's opera „Der Freischütz", premiered in Berlin in 1821. The original is regarded as the founding work of German Romantic opera. The children's version introduces young audiences, through an abridged plot and gentle storytelling, to the famous tale of love, courage and dark temptation.

Plot

The young huntsman Max loves Agathe, daughter of the head forester, and wishes to marry her. But by old custom he must first pass a trial shot to win the forester's post and with it Agathe's hand. Abandoned by fortune and tormented by fear of failure, Max lets himself be seduced by his sinister comrade Kaspar, who is secretly in league with dark powers. In the ghostly Wolf's Glen, at the midnight hour, they cast seven „magic bullets" that strike infallibly — but the last belongs to the diabolical Samiel and goes wherever he directs it. At the decisive trial shot, disaster threatens to endanger Agathe. In the end evil is overcome: Kaspar meets his death, Max is forgiven after a period of probation, and trust prevails.

Cultural significance

„Der Freischütz" is the German Romantic national opera par excellence; the Wolf's Glen scene in particular, with its eerie tone-painting, became famous. Children's versions such as this belong to the regular education programmes of many opera houses, introducing young audiences playfully to music theatre, orchestral sound and the Romantic world of storytelling.
