About the work
Happening (French "L'Événement") is an autobiographical text by the French Nobel laureate Annie Ernaux from the year 2000, adapted in numerous stage versions. In it Ernaux unsparingly recounts her illegal abortion as a young student in 1960s France.
Plot
In 1963 the young Annie, a literature student, becomes unintentionally pregnant—at a time when abortion in France is strictly forbidden and socially condemned. Abandoned by doctors, friends, and the child's father, she fights desperately to find a way out of her situation, living through weeks of fear, shame, and physical danger before finally seeking out a clandestine abortionist. The text reconstructs this existential experience with sober precision, turning an individual fate into testimony for an entire suppressed generation of women.
Cultural significance
Happening is among the most formative works of Annie Ernaux, who received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2022. With her characteristic "flat writing," devoid of all sentimentality, she combines personal memory and sociological analysis. As a powerful document of self-determination, class, and female experience, the text—reinforced by the acclaimed 2021 film adaptation—has gained new relevance in debates over reproductive rights and is widely adapted for the stage.
