About the work
Amleto is an opera in four acts by Franco Faccio to a libretto by Arrigo Boito, based on Shakespeare's Hamlet. It premiered on 30 May 1865 at the Teatro Carlo Felice in Genoa under conductor Angelo Mariani.
Plot
The Danish prince Amleto learns from the ghost of his murdered father that his brother Claudio killed him to seize the throne and queen Geltrude. Amleto's quest for revenge ends in the deaths of nearly all the main characters.
Cultural significance
After a revised version failed at La Scala in Milan in 1871, Faccio withdrew the work; as the only fully surviving opera by a composer later famous chiefly as Verdi's conductor, Amleto was rediscovered and staged again only in the 21st century.
