Biography
Franco Faccio was born on 8 March 1840 in Verona and studied from 1855 at the Milan Conservatory under Stefano Ronchetti-Monteviti, where he met the lifelong friend and later librettist Arrigo Boito. After composing his own early operas, including Amleto in 1865, he increasingly turned to conducting and became principal conductor of La Scala in Milan from 1871. There he conducted, among other works, the Italian premiere of Verdi's Aida and, in 1887, the world premiere of his Otello. He gave up the post due to illness in 1889; Faccio died on 21 July 1891 in Monza.
