About the work

Historical drama by Brazilian playwright Miguel M. Abrahão, published in 1983 and registered the same year with the Brazilian playwrights' society SBAT (case no. 36030, 19 October 1983). The play is set in the 1930s during the dictatorship of Getúlio Vargas.

Plot

At a conservative primary school, teacher Bolívar Bueno champions progressive pedagogical ideas against the resistance of the school's administration. His conflict with the headmaster and his circle mirrors the wider political tensions of the Vargas era between reform and repression.

Cultural significance

"A Escola" is considered one of Abrahão's best-known plays; in 2005 the author reworked the material into a historical novel of the same name, published in 2007, which expanded on the play's historical background, including the 1932 Constitutionalist Revolt.
