The Théâtre du Capitole is located in the Capitole, Toulouse's city hall, on the Place du Capitole. Guillaume Cammas created the first theatre space inside the municipal building in 1736; after years of neglect it was remodelled in 1818. After a fire in 1917, Paul Pujol restored the theatre in neo-Baroque style by 1923; the foyers were modernised in 1996. The Italian-style auditorium seats 1,156. The house has its own chorus and the Ballet du Capitole, while the Orchestre national du Capitole de Toulouse plays in the pit and gives its symphony concerts at the Halle aux Grains. Michel Plasson, artistic director from 1973, shaped its reputation. Since 2021 the theatre has held the title Opéra national du Capitole.
The Théâtre du Capitole in Toulouse has resided since 1818 in the Capitole Building, the city hall — a unique fusion of political and cultural power in one structure.
